Springfield Brewery DVD

Unique film footage.
A tour of the interior and exterior of the brewery buildings before the devastating arson attack

This DVD was originally released in 2007. This reissue has new voice over, new film footage taken after the fire devastation and slide content bringing the story of Springfield Brewery up to date in 2014. Built in 1873 as the William Butler Brewery – later to become Mitchell & Butlers Wolverhampton – production ceased in 1991.

The 12-acre site was acquired by a property developer but for a time the premises were used as a depot by drinks industry distribution firm Tradeteam to service M&B contracts. This occupancy provided some security for the Grade 2 listed brewery which remained intact but deteriorating while planning permission was sought for redevelopment.

The exciting and visionary plans by Simon Developments included a brewery museum, fashion designer outlet, bars, restaurants, cafes, offices and loft style apartments in the brewery tower. A canal side marina was also envisaged. Despite the onsite security arsonists torched the brewery in 2004 resulting in much of the building infrastructure unsafe.

Demolition was the only option but some of the brewery tower remains today albeit a sad looking wreck. Planning consent for the redevelopment was declined initially but later plans for a residential scheme did obtain approval only to be hit by economic decline and a slowdown in the housing market. As at 2014 the site is vacant with a few original buildings remaining.

As for the future of Springfield Brewery it was coincidental that the updating of this video coincided with a surprise announcement in September 2014. By 2020, the University of Wolverhampton University had acquired the site, commissioned architects to incorporate what remained of the 12 acre brewery site into a £100 million redevelopment of the historic landmark building, creating a world leading School of Architecture and the Built environment.
